High tide

In recent decades, floods have become ever more frequent and intense due to a simultaneous rise in sea level and drop in land level. Today the lagoon area is more than ever at risk of a catastrophic event such as that of 4 November 1966 when a tide of 194 cm completely overwhelmed Venice, Chioggia, towns and villages in the lagoon and the islands. Every year, while not reaching such a high level, dozens of floods, nevertheless, cause serious inconvenience to citizens and lead to the slow deterioration of buildings and the ecosystem as a whole.
